Stocks Burst Through Breakeven to End Long Week

Markets battled their way out of the negative side of things Friday, finally winning the battle as the closing bell sounded, mostly a credit to utilities and health-care stocks.

The TSX squeezed higher 2.01 to close Friday at 20,419.62. On the week, though, the index lost 122 points, or 0.6%.

The Canadian dollar erased 0.29 cents to 73.78 cents U.S.

Utilities proved the star of the session, with Brookfield Infrastructure Partners hearing the loudest applause, up $1.11, or 2.3%, to $48.57, while Superior Plus taking on 24 cents, or 2.4%, to $10.39.

Health-care also did well, with Sienna Senior Living shares acquiring 52 cents, or 4.7% to $11.78, while Chartwell Retirement Residences gaining 16 cents, or 1.7%, to $9.60.

In industrials, Brookfield Business Partners climbed 94 cents, or 4.1%, to $23.46, while Boyd Group Services charged up $4.10, or 1.7%, to $244..22.

General Malaise Hits Stocks Throughout North America

Stocks in Toronto were bruised yet again Thursday, hit hard by losses in the cannabis sector, well as in mining and gold stocks.

The TSX was in the red 81.7 points to conclude Thursday at 20,417.61.

The Canadian dollar plummeted 0.65 cents to 74.11 cents U.S.

Health-care took the brunt of investor indifference, with Canopy Growth sliding 23 cents, or 14.2%, to $1.39, while Tilray lost 43 cents, or 11.7%, to $3.26.

In materials, Capstone mining doffed 61 cents, or 9.6%, to $5.75, while First Quantum dropped $2.66, or 7.9%, to $30.79.

Gold also suffered, as Torex Gold was pounded $4.11, 17% to $20.04, while Lundin Gold lost $1.62, or 8.5%, to $17.42.

In consumer staples, Maple Leaf ignored the negative tide and climbed $2.40, or 9.6%, to $27.38, while Primo Water jumped 55 cents, or 3%, to $19.22.

TSX Finishes Negative

Stocks in Toronto were roughed up a mite Wednesday, as weakness in the energy and material sectors burdened the market.

The TSX was down 86.42 points to close Wednesday to 20,499.31.

The Canadian dollar forged ahead 0.03 cents to 74.77 cents U.S.

As mentioned off the top, energy tumbled, mostly Tourmaline Oil, declining $3.28, or 5.5%, to $55.96, while Peyto Exploration slipped 38 cents, or 3.1%, to $11.84.

In materials, Endeavour Silver cratered 80 cents, or 14.2%, to $4.82, while Mag Silver tumbled $1.16, or 6.6%, to $16.56.

Food stocks also took the brunt of it, most notably George Weston, off $4.73, or 2.7%, to $170.22, while Maple Leaf Foods slumped 75 cents, or 2.9%, to $25.00.

Industrials tried to help the markets dig out somewhat, as Boyd Group captured $16.67, or 7.3%, to $244.19, while Exchange Income Corporation shares took on $2.11, or 4.1%, to $54.04.
